Adelaide United FC midfielder Lucas Pantelis will be out of action for at least 4-6 weeks with a knee injury.

The 26 year old had an MRI scan yesterday which revealed damage to the ACL graft in his left knee, the same one he had reconstructed back in 2006 which kept him out of the Hyundai A-League 2006/07 Season.

Adelaide United’s Vice-Captain suffered the injury in The Reds’ loss to the Central Coast Mariners last Saturday night in Gosford when he landed awkwardly and felt something go in his knee.

Following discussions with Adelaide United Club Doctor James Ilic, he indicated that Pantelis would go through a 4-6 week rehabilitation program before they make a final assessment on the extent of the injury.

“We are going to give him a trial rehab for 4-6 weeks and then we’ll look at it again to see if whether he will need a full knee reconstruction or can resume training,” Ilic said.

Sadly for Pantelis, who was United’s equal leading scorer in the Hyundai A-League 2007/08 Season, the setback will keep him out of next month’s FIFA Club World Cup in Japan.

Adelaide United FC has given up second spot on the Hyundai A-League table after suffering a 3-nil loss to the Central Coast Mariners in front of 7,865 at Bluetongue Stadium in Gosford.

Despite having their share of chances, The Reds were unable to bounce back just three days after their AFC Champions League Final defeat as Matt Simon, Sasho Petrovski and Adrian Caceres all managed to get their names on the score sheet to send United packing.

From Wednesday night’s AFC Champions League Final 2nd leg, goalkeeper Eugene Galekovic, Angelo Costanzo and Fabian Barbiero all returned to the starting line up against the Central Coast in a match that had significant bearings for both sides, the Mariners starting the night three points behind United.

Questions about any ACL Final hangover were answered early by The Reds who started promisingly, Barbiero narrowly missing the target with a curling shot after an assist by Travis Dodd.

Adelaide United FC has it all to do in the return leg of the AFC Champions League Final after suffering a 3-nil loss to the hands of a classy and relentless Gamba Osaka at the Expo ’70 Commemorative Stadium.

The Reds and all Australian football supporters went into the match with high hopes but two goals towards the end of the first half followed by a third on 68 minutes has given Gamba one hand on the AFC Champions League title.

The Japanese side was close to unstoppable at their home ground and they showed why they have scored more goals than any other side in the competition with some clinical finishing and exceptional attacking movement.

Compounding the result for United is goalkeeper Eugene Galekovic and experienced defender Angelo Costanzo are out of the return leg at Hindmarsh Stadium after receiving their second yellow cards of the Knockout Stage, meaning an automatic one match suspension.

Adelaide United FC has gone down 2-nil (5-nil on aggregate) to a classy Gamba Osaka on a warm night in front of a full house at Hindmarsh Stadium, the J-League club crowned the new AFC Champions League champions.

Gamba’s Brazilian striker Lucas did the damage, netting both goals within 9 minutes to totally deflate the home side and justify his 3 million dollar salary.

The match started with Adelaide needing to cut back a three goal deficit from the first leg in Osaka, and they started the better in the first couple of minutes, taking the game to Gamba from the word go.

But in the 4th minute the J-League club killed the match when Lucas pounced on a save from 17 year old goalkeeper Mark Birighitti to find the back of the net and stun and deflate the optimistic home crowd.

Then, if the title was not already in Gamba’s keeping, they made certain of it in the 15th minute when Lucas netted his second, producing a superb touch to send the ball past Birighitti. The Reds would now need six goals to come back.

Cristiano thought he had given United some joy midway through the first half, however any chance of a momentum shift was short lived as the Brazilian was adjudged off side.

Adelaide United FC has gone down 3-2 to Melbourne Victory at Hindmarsh Stadium tonight in Round 10 of the Hyundai A-League 2008/09 Season.

Despite taking the lead twice through a Travis Dodd penalty and Cassio blasting his first Hyundai A-League goal into the back of the net, Melbourne was able to respond on both occasions with two penalties to Victory captain Kevin Muscat before Billy Celeski netted the winner with six minutes to go.

On a night full of drama, United took the lead twice only to see the Victory peg their way back and eventually wear down a fatiguing Reds outfit to take all three points.

Diego was a late withdrawal from the squad with hamstring tightness while Cassio, Dodd and Angelo Costanzo all came back into the starting eleven. It was a typically heated opening with both sides determined to take the contest on at rapid fire pace.

United had the first chance of the match in the 7th minute when Cristiano brought the ball delightfully inside onto his left but his shot went disappointingly wide of the mark.
